5 simple tips for more everyday fitness.

The blogger workshop has to wait:
Today I feel the sudden urge to write something about exercise!

Beware:
All workout fanatics and pros can skip reading this, as there will be neither groundbreaking news (“the perfect bikini body in just three weeks!”) nor any extensive instructions.

My post is more likely directed at all those who…

- have so far not really taken to exercise, but would like to be fit all the same,

- have a densely filled work day,

- instead of “my life will be completely different from now on, I am going to change absolutely EVERYTHING” prefer to integrate a short unit into their daily life, which shows a maximum of results with a minimum of effort.

In other words, people like me ;).

For, yes, I am slim (which is 90% due to my eating habits and 10% due to my genes) – but I am not completely fit.
And there is a big difference!
For joints and muscles as well as endurance.

I have actually meant to change this for quite a while.
Yet I wasn’t ready to invest a lot of effort and big changes, nor to put in a lot of time.

I have been running for several weeks now, and afterwards I add a few simple and effective exercises:
all in all it does not take me much more than half an hour.

How did this happen?
Here are my tips and personal experiences – I am sure one thing or another will help you, too!

1. Motivation.

What triggered me was one single sentence:
"When you get up in the morning, drink a glass of water, put on your running shoes and run! And only return after 20 minutes.”

I have talked about this here before.

The simplicity of this statement nearly shocked me, as I instantly knew:
"Even I should be able to achieve THAT?!”

Very easy.
Put on shoes.
Start running.
Return after 20 minutes.

WHAT’S THE PROBLEM?!

All that’s keeping you are lame excuses, that’s literally ALL. So every time I didn’t feel like going (and it was obvious that that was going to happen) I asked myself straight off: "Do I not value my body enough to just go and invest 20 minutes? Or am I just too lazy?”
I just didn’t tolerate any excuses, that was all.
And, surprise: everything’s running smoothly.
Literally.

I am excited for anybody who wakes up one morning basking in the deep revelation: "I will change my life – EVERYTHING. NOW.” And who then goes on to become a superjock and fitness guru – but honestly: how often does that happen?
How long do you want to wait?

In the meantime you better drink a glass of water, put on your shoes and run.

Difficult?
Nope. Easy.

2. Preparation.

As simple as I had set out, as simple do I intend to keep it.

Which means:
I already had a pair of running shoes, I added 3 sports bras from H&M.
That’s all.
No stylish functional clothing, no apps, no heart rate monitor technical thingamabobs.
I don’t even own an iPod.

Should you still need running shoes, please go to a specialist store and get some advice – it is a science in itself and you will truly get your individually perfect shoe there. But it is also quite funny.
In the morning I put on my sweatpants (oh yeah, the ones that I used to wear for lounging around), a T-shirt or a long-sleeved shirt and off I go.
I bet 90% of all readers own sweatpants and a T-shirt!

If it is a little chilly a hoodie serves me well, as my ears easily hurt in the cold wind.
I pull the cuffs over my hands as a substitute for gloves, the hood warms my head and if it gets warmer, I unzip the sweater jacket.
If it gets really warm, I take off the T-shirt too, tie it around my waist and only wear the sports bra (2 on top of each other, which was a tip from Jil who runs regularly).

I run entirely without make-up, my hair in a bun on top of my head – if it’s warm my hairdo usually morphs into a visual disaster.

Complicated?
Nope. Easy.

3. Speed and mileage.

Like anything else I do, I didn’t want to allow any pressure in this area either.

I decided to really ENJOY this time.
The fresh cool air, nature, my body and how it moves.
Amazing or what?
I have two legs that carry me, sometimes fast, sometimes slowly wherever I want to go!
If that’s no reason to be incredibly grateful!
When I slow down I feel a pleasant tingling all over – caused by the fresh air and the exertion.
Like sparkly lemonade tickling me all over.
Niiiice.

I have no intention whatsoever to “cover” a certain distance or successfully accomplish anything, I make no demands on myself – I don’t compete with anybody.
Why should I?

I am relaxed while running at a slow speed that allows me to breathe regularly.
The whole thing in intervals: 5 minutes running, 5 minutes walking, 5 minutes running, short sprint (after which I am half-dead!), and then walking.
The first few times I ran for about 13 minutes, upping it to approx. 25 to 30 minutes due to the route.

I can integrate this well into my morning.
I usually leave the house after the kids have gone to school and I have tidied the kitchen.
And I run only every other day.
No “I made 5km today!”
No “I want to improve.”
And above all (!) never ever a guilty conscience, if time restraints don’t allow me to go for 2 or 3 days.
I personally abhor things like a guilty conscience – for whatever reason - , and I certainly don’t want to add that to exercising, too.
If I exercise: great.
If I don’t: whatever.

By the way, you can seriously run almost everywhere, and you can even pack the shoes when travelling.

Difficult?
Come on.
So easy.

4. Muscle growth.

When I return from my run I am abviously already in my sports gear – so why not immediately add 2 to 3 simple and effective exercises to stimulate muscle growth? It doesn’t even take 10 minutes, I don’t have to drive to a gym, everything I need for it, I have at home. (One pillow, two one-quart bottles of water for weight lifting).

One of the exercises for example is relaxed sitting, back to the wall.
WITHOUT a chair, mind you.

(see HERE).
Now do that for a minute….

For as we know running is more of a cardio & endurance thing (please correct me, if I’m wrong, I am not so knowledgable with these things!) – for a great physique you have to put in a little bit more effort.

I carry out everything slowly and in a controlled manner, and just as often as I manage to do it – and that is usually not that often. Nevertheless my muscles are always sore the following day.

This makes for a flat stomach, strong support for the spine (a tense neck often results in headaches) and: muscles burn fat even when you’re at rest.

By the way, Jil’s trainer Alex showed me the exercises – a competent and unbelievably likeable man, who even writes a blog ;).
So if you are further interested in fitness and nutrition, visit him HERE!

3- 4 exercises that take not even 15 minutes?
Easy.
Even I can achieve THAT – now that I am already standing here in my living room, sweating ;).

5. Attitude.

As in a lot of other areas there is a risk you run also in the area of exercise and fitness, a risk called: religion.

In other words:
You declare your own way of living as the Only One and from now on look down on anybody who is too weak/fat/lazy/ignorant/unable to live just like you.
Maybe only behind closed doors, maybe just in your head – still, from now on you look condescendingly at anybody who lives a different life.

So, if you already exercise regularly and notice the following or similar thoughts running through your head:
"Well, SHE could really use some exercise, look at how unathletic she looks!”
"5K?! Ridiculous, I can do 4 times as much!”
"Oh man, I am so much BETTER, because I am athletic!”
 - you are well on your way straight to hell.

Well, congrats!
By chance I overheard a conversation at the grocery store, where two women condescendingly talked about the contents of the shopping cart on the conveyor band at the check-out – mind you, not about their own, but about the person’s in front of them.
"When I look at what I just bought, only fruits and vegetables and healthy things, and compare it to this one up front, just processed food – I fell so much better. How on earth can you buy all that!”
This is a shining example of derogatory religious behavior – it exists, of course, also in other areas of life:
Be it fashion ("how dare you wear something like that?”, “I am dressed with SO much more style”) , parenting ("I am just totally the better mom, I would NEVER allow my child to do that!”), interior decoration ("OMG, a tiled living room?! My house is decorated so much more tastefully…”), vaccination of young children, vegan diet, etc., etc. etc.
In some areas outright religious wars are fought ;).

Every time you look down on others, compare yourself with others and feel better afterwards - just forget it.
If you feel worse afterwards, on the other hand, it’s simply inferiority – just forget it, too, is what I think ;).

Just be happy about your own change, don’t judge others – live and let live.
Not so difficult, right?
You see: everything’s easy ;).
That’s how I like it!

With love,
Joanna

p.s. We had some girls sleeping over today.
When I took the pictures for this post, the ladies had just gotten up (11:30am!); in passing Noelle’s friend said to her, laughing: “Your mother! She rather takes a picture of her running shoes than run in them!”
It's a tough job.

10 facts about Samuel.

What’s wrong with this picture:
You and your husband are sitting at the breakfast table at 11am.
By yourselves.

Are the children maybe on sleepovers?
Or are you, as a couple, staying in a hotel room?
No.
All children in the house are asleep.

It’s a fact that for the past couple of years the eldest child has been returning home in the early morning hours and consequently slept until noon.
But the fact that EVERYBODY is fast asleep at this time of day can only mean one thing:
There are ONLY teenagers in my house.

My sister is lightyears away from that – the night’s over at 6am.
For everyone in the house!
Welcome to living with an 18-month-old.

When I visited my sister the week before last, I brought her a fantastically beautiful baby bundle by MyCircus – our taste is naturally a little similar, so I was sure that she’d be excited about the new cushions and stuffed animals!

She has been a fan of the stylish
pacifier straps* for a long time, and once more I hit the mark with the lovely big star cushions and the star mobile:
simple baby accessories without frills are not that easy to find!

Samuel also got a Nicky Bird made of velours, which can be used simultaneously as cushion, cuddly toy or decoration – the bird is velvety soft and perfectly graspable for little hands. Stars and birds are available in different colors and always come in very tasteful color combinations.

By the way,
My Circus* was launched by designer Anne Mayr and editor Julia Schmidt:
both women do not only have a wonderful sense of style, they also highly value sustainability.
All textiles in their product line are produced in Germany meeting a high social standard and they are made of 100% organic cotton.
Everything is made with a lot of love and care, down to the smallest details – and this quality really shows.

Due to the long distance between us I unfortunately don’t see my nephew very often – to keep you updated (and making sure you don’t fall over backwards, when he gets his driver’s license the day after tomorrow) I assembled a few crucial facts!

10 facts about Samuel.

1. Every construction site has to be marvelled at at length – “at length” means a time span of about 30 minutes. At least. (A quick flashback to 2-year-old Ben: I used to set up a chair in front of the hoarding and got a book for myself, so that I wouldn’t die of boredom. Right in front of the construction site.)

2. Samuel loves books.

Reading to him is a daily must: as soon as he enters his room, he runs over to the cozy corner with the pile of cushions and grabs a book from his shelves.

3. His current favorite word is "Gurka" (“Cuke”), which he has every morning for breakfast.

Gurka sounds a little Polish – however, my sister does not speak Polish with him, except for two sentences ("choc tutaj, maluszku!", "co ty robisz?").
The child’s father, on the other hand, highly motivated and all, has already gathered a ton of English children’s books – with the intention to speak English with the child, starting at birth.
This has not happened to this day.

The result is that my nephew has escaped the status of intellectually gifted only at hair’s breadth – a status instilled into every child of Berlin’s Prenzlauer Berg with his mother’s milk.

Just imagine: trilingual!
Well, almost.
So far only “Cuke”.

4. Oh… speaking of “gathering”.

The child’s father has already purchased 500,-€ worth of Playmobil toys.
No kidding.
Because he himself didn’t have any as a child.
(My sister went nuts after finding out.)
The Playmobil toys are now waiting in the basement until the child reaches the appropriate age.

Oh dear, if I had bought all the toys for my children that I didn’t have when I was a child, we would…well…ok, we’d have…

Hold on. That is exactly what I did.
(But it’s a COMPLETELY different story in my case, of course!)

5. My nephew repeats every song he knows and he knows their melodies.
My sister remembered Ben’s then favorite CD and got the exact same one for her son – now also high on Samuel’s list.
(What she did not know: This CD drives you CRAZY when listened to in the car for four hours on end. Even after more than 10 years I still know half the songs by heart. Should I ever have to listen to one of them ever again, I will run away screaming, I swear).

6. The little Berlin boy loves Pretzels from Suabia in Southern Germany.

7. And fish, especially salmon.

8. If you are caught with a positive pregnancy test in Berlin, the first question you will be asked is whether you have already reserved your spot in a daycare center – followed by appalled glares, if the answer is no.

My nephew at age 1 and a half does not attend a daycare center yet, and does not even know words like “mine”.
This becomes particularly obvious on the playground, where he willingly passes on his toys and is totally aghast, if other children do not want to share their possessions.

9. Samuel loves taking a bath and he has awesome fine motor skills:

my sister hands him two small bottles and he fills water from one into the other without spilling a drop.
This activity keeps him occupied for minutes.

10. My sister cannot take a shower, EXCEPT when she lets her son run the washing machine.

Several times a week.
He enthusiastically presses every button followed by the start button and sits in front of the empty machine, completely fascinated, while the washing program runs its cycle.

No toy or any such thing can distract him.

Altogether now:
Oh noooooo, these first-time parents!
What a fuss they make!
Washing machine, excuse me?!

It goes without saying that I have
never given in to such ridiculous things in my time.
Everything always ran wonderfully smoothly and I was NEVER half-desperate and totally irritated by my own one-and-a-half-year old, who clung to my leg without a break and either wanted to hear “VroomVroom” for the 30th time or alternatively look at a construction site.
Not me, never.

But I bought a ton of toys.

A TON.
The image shows Ben at approximately age 1 and a half.

p.s. How did the blogger workshop on the week-end go?

And who paid you a visit on the week-end?
You will find out tomorrow when you tune in again!

Your favorite flower.

Tell me, do you have a favorite flower?
One that you makes you beam with delight every time and everywhere you receive it as a gift; one, that you would exclusively buy yourself, because its beauty fascinates you so?

I really had to ponder on this one and I can only think of one answer:
I don’t have a favorite!
Never in my life could I decide between the fragile white blossoms of a crysanthemum and enchantingly scented colorful roses, elegant calla lilies and voluptuous hydrangeas - I prefer choosing my flowers depending on the season and the mood of the day!

Some of my favorites are, for example, flowers in white and green hues: especially hydrangeas and snowballs.
This color combination seems very fresh and young to me.
Aren’t the parrot tulips breathtaking?

I have a hard time resisting roses with big blossoming tops: if they come in a colorful mixture and with an intensively sweet aroma to boot, I can barely get enough of them!

Just too beautiful at this time of year are these:
colorful filled tulips that, in a bouquet, create an impression of fireworks.
My friend gave me this bunch yesterday ;)

Would you spontaneously know your friend’s favorite type of flower? We are usually aware of her favorite candy, tea and preferred type of man – but flowers?

Speaking of which, the Blumenbüro Holland is running a wonderful promotion right now: you can pick your girlfriend’s favorite flower here TollwasBlumenmachen  - with the chance to win a bunch of those exact flowers for her! Give it a try it and see whether you made the right assumption.

This page explains everything again in more detail and additionally you can watch a pretty little video.
Maybe you can surprise your friend with a gift soon?

By the way, Blumenbüro Holland is a non-profit organization which supports florists – for more color, freshness and fragrance in the home ;)!

Quinoa Granola + Soccer Controversy

I tried something delicious recently and I do need to write it down for you:
The quinoa granola is a pretty and healthy breakfast alternative!

Furthermore it can be assembled in 5 minutes and just has to bake in the oven – nothing better than that.

I expanded my collection of Design Letters dishes and supplemented them with the Ferm Living espresso cups.

A few weeks ago I started replacing my afternoon cup of black tea with espresso, and guess what:
I don’t go into a slump anymore, but feel continuosly fit!
For most of you this is hardly a profound revelation, but for me it is a big change – and by doing this I gained one hour ;) .
Plus, the espresso actually tastes wonderful, once the taste buds have somewhat adjusted to the bitterness.

Did you know that the letters on the Design Letters cups and plates were originally created by Arne Jacobsen?
Well, whatever, in any case they are eye candy!

Quinoa Granola
(based on Donna Hay)

1 and 1/3 cup white quinoa
1/2 cup oats
1/3 cup sunflower seeds
1/2 Tbl cinnamon
¼ cup maple syrup
2 Tbl vegetable oil

Mix all ingredients together and distribute on two cookie sheets covered in parchment paper.
Preheat oven and bake at 350°F for approx. 20-30 minutes or until golden brown.

Speaking of profound revelations:

Yesterday evening Noelle entered the room:

"I just watched soccer with Papa!"
Me: "Sooo?"
Noelle: "And I couldn’t help but notice …"

Now for the sentence feared by every man:

For it doesn’t matter how much women stress that they get the off-side rule, and that they are generally interested in soccer (“I am so much cooler than the other girls, I don’t need any make-up and I loooooove soccer. Yeah, really!”) – we all know it:
in the end, no matter what, we all end up saying the all revealing sentence, uttered in complete honesty:
"But the blonde one back there, he is really cuuuuute!”

What can you do?
This is when we mutually agreed that watching a game with a female commentator would be SO.MUCH.MORE.ENTERTAINING for everybody.

Because men just keep saying monotonous stuff that nobody (and no woman) is interested in, right?

A female commentator, however,– taking friendly turns with the male counterpart, of course, to satisfy both target groups – would at least deliver FACTS in her comments.

Little sample demonstration by Noelle?

"Have you also noticed that the English players are all so much better looking than the German ones?”

"The Germans (or those guys playing on our team – which one of them is actually GERMAN?) might be good at it, but honestly: from a visual point of view some of them could pass as the Hunchback of Notre-Dame.”

"I don’t think this jersey is doing his eye color any favors. A guy like Manuel Neuer could play up his looks so much more.”

"Valencia – he has great cheek bones.”

"And anyways: those black people. That skin color. They can wear shorts all through the winter. They don’t even know what a “white-leg” problem is.”

"Apart from that they are always crazy good at dancing and singing. It’s all in the genes. Oh, it is so unfair!”

"Mama, why didn’t you marry a black guy?! You never take us into consideration! I could have had a perfect latte skin tone and I would pair that with singing "if you like it then you should've put a ring on it"!”
(Noelle starts dancing in front of the couch and sings "Single Ladies" at the top of her voice to emphasize her statement.

And so on…and so on…

(Yet again we agree that Noelle should marry a black Swede with English roots and a French mother – because of the genes and the trilingual upbringing of her future children.)

Between you and me:

isn’t that 100 times more entertaining than some “here comes player x, who left club y already last season…” – what? How? Yawn?
The fact that nobody has ever thought of that….I just don’t get it.

ZDF, public television stations, do something.

With love,

Joanna
